Roady watched proudly from his paddock, his band of mares grazing nearby. His son would grow up to be a wonderful stallion, he was sure. He had sired only three other foals, one other colt, a three year old, that was now a gelding because he didn't sire good foals, most likely that was from his dam's side, an old nag she was. 9 years, gray, not dappled, brown eyes, blaze. That's what she looked like. The gelding was a bay, beautiful, overo like his sire, blue eyes, from his sire, handsome. Two flickas, both to-be broodmares, one flicka, the oldest was a black tobiano, green eyes. The younger of the two was a dun overo, blue eyes.
Rayne nickered to Red as the horses were rounded up. The fillies looked confused but walked into a circle anyways. From the horizen, the horses were golden.

Roady nodded solemnly and reared, striking out ebon daggers into the soft oxygen that he had no control over. Blue eyes flashed as he came down whickering to his band to move on. The mares and foals obeyed the yearlings had once been in his band and they moved away like they were going with the other herd then decided against it and walked back to Red and started to graze. Roady galloped behind his band he was leading them to Castle Rock, about 4 miles, or 8 acres away. He galloped around them like a pace horse.
Rayne nickered to Red affectionatly. Sun glared at Ray, the pinto horse paying no attention to the Buckskin. Moonshine nickered warmly to Sunshine and Sun turned on her heel and trotted with Moonshine to the stream for a drink.

The little band of yearling obeyed their leader, Moonshine and Sunshine at the back, the half sisters nickered and talked to each other quietly, not wishing for the band, or leader to hear. All of a sudden Rayne reared up, the whites of her eyes showing, a fox kit had startled her, Chris saw the flash of red huddle down, sleek as a snake she hurled herself over the fence and ran to Ray, she took a lock of mane in her hand and pulled her down, speaking soft words of German, her homeland. Ray quieted down and shook her head, moving around the kit and Chris to be with Red again, the three other yearlings cantering about, just to join the band agian.
Chris quickly picked up the fox in her arms, a towel wrapped around it, she quickly took him into the house, he wasn't even old enough to be weaned, she clicked in Sam's vet number, Jake answered.Jake? The boy's little sister asked him.Yeah Chris? What is it? The voice was of a concerned older brother, not a grown man. He was startled by the sincerity and worry in the tone of his little sister's voice.Tell Sam I'm coming in with a fox kit. She said.Got it, fox kit. Her older brother repeted. She nodded, even if he couldn't see it, it reassured her. She hung up without saying goodbye. Jake wouldn't care, he knew her.
Roady and his band were soon at Castle Rock, where they would spend the night. The mares grazed and the foals suckled, soon the flickas and coltens were asleep in the tall grass that was hardly ever grazed upon. The soft stalks tickling their mugs and velvetines. Their little stubby whipcords swatting at invisible flies and mosquitos.

Brookie was out in the pasture with them but she was grazing alone. She watched the herd and then ate some more. Red looked at them and walked out of the corrla and if they want to stay out in to pasture they could and he would stay with them.

The young yearlings stood in the pasture, grazing.
Roady walked slinkily to Brookie.Lo Brookie. He said softly from behind her. The slight wind billowing his tassles and whipcord. Brookie must have come to take a break from Green Creek.

The yearlings had settled down for the night, laying in the jade. Their longish cords holding still, unlike the colten's. But one flicka,Rayne stood solemnly, away from the rest of the herd, looking deep into space. Her pools longing, longing to be free again.
Roady's herd was asleep.
