I walked into the barn, quickly hooking the mare to the crossties. As I looked up I saw Sam, I forced a small smile.
It was just like last time.
I whispered, all the times I had tried to jump I always stopped, to afraid to continue. I wanted to get over this fear, this problem. I had said it to Sam. It was just like what happened at the show, that's why I had stoped. Toaro had knocked down a rail, I had looked back to see it and when I turned back around we were but only a stride from the next fence. I had moved into the two-point position and Taoro had refused, veering sideways to send me crashing to the ground.

Sam went over to Rae, watching her tie up Affair. What happened last time? she asked, crossing her arms and leaning on teh wall. But, she felt she knew. When I was starting with cattle cutting, I was working with my new mare. SHe was really spooky and we were out in the middle of no where, herding a small group of cattle in. We had to cut some out to stay and graze but she shied from teh bull.. Her eyes unfocused as she stared off, remmebering that mare. She went one way and I went the other. All I remeber is shooting through the air faster then ever. Next day or I think it was day, I woke up, laying on a couple of raocks and unable to move my arm or even breathe well. Her voice grew softer. She had never told anyone.

I read Sam's lips, knowing it was something tragic to Sam. After she had finished talking I took a deep breath and spoke.
It was the state show, I was riding my gelding named Toaro. We went through about half the course clean, but we came to a combination and he knocked down a rail. I looked over my shoulder as I heard it clatter to the ground. When I looked back I seen the jump was only a stride away. I had moved into two-point already and Toaro refused, I did just as you did. I went one way, Toaro went the other. I went into a coma and when I woke up a couple days later...I was deaf.
The story had been cut down, I didn't talk about my shot at regionals, I didn;t speak of my earlier classes that I had placed in.

Sam smiled softly at her.But there is one difference. You were cared for. I had to crawl onto the mare, who was nervous but atleast she knew how to ground tie. It took me a long time to get home, she said gently. That very mare was sent to soem breeder where she was used teh rest of her life as a brood mare.

I nodded, I knew I was lucky. But Sam could get back on a horse with no problem. When I seen a downed rail I freaked out and was forced to stop riding.
I was lucky, I just wish I could go through a course without having to stop. Whenever I see a downed rail everything comes back and I freeze up. I don;t think I will be able to compete in the show, what if I get out there and it happens again?
I had just spilled all my worries to Sam. But it didn't worry me because I knew Sam understood. I had tried to solve the problem by myself, but over the three years I had had no luck.

Sam rubbed her chin, thinking hard.Hmmm the ways I know of helping work with horses. We could tie you to a rail and make you stare at a fallen rail, she said, smiling to show she was joking.

I smiled at her joke, truely amuzed at her joke. It had lifted my mood. Maybe I would actually go look at a fallen rail and keep telling myself nothing would happen. It was worth a shot.

Sam rubbed her chin again, thinking hard.I have an idea. Lets start at teh beginning of jumping like going over poles on the ground, low jumps, those sorta things with Affair, she said, looking at the jumped.

I yilted my head to the side slightly.
Today?....Now?
I questioned, unsure if I was ready or not.

Sam smiled at her softly.Only if you want, she replied. It was like falling off a horse, you just get right back on.

I thought about it and took the reins and grabbed the helmet. I looked to Sam, smiling as my way of telling her I was ready. I lead Affair back out to the arena and put the helmet back on my head. I pulled down the stirrups and put my foot in to pull myself up. I settled in the saddle, taking a deep breath.

Sam took down some jumps, knowing Josh would get piseed about it, and set the poles on the ground, well spaced. The other jumps she took down some bars so they were lower and noddd to Rae to start.

I nudged Affair's sides, sending her into a trot around the arena. I made one lap and moved her to the ground poles. After we went over I turned her to them again and took her over them two more times. I then turned her to the lowest jump, Affair only had to step over it but she jumped it properly. A small smile curved my lips, turning to the next jump. Affair popped over it eagerly, giving a small flick of her heels as she went over. I turned and looked at Sam, I was slightly stiff.

Sam smiled at her. She was doing fine. Affair was taking it easy, happy to be working and eth jumps were low enough so if she didn't make it or refused, which wouldn't happen most likely, there wouldn't be any damage to teh rider or the jump.
