I smiled and stroked Shady's neck. I knew as a new rider to Shady I shouldn't push her to far. I dismounted, looking to Sam.
I think that's enough for today.
I took the reins and lead the mare over to Sam, stroking her cheek softly. I stopped her by the gate as I slid the latch back. I guided Shady towards the barn, she was such a sweet mare. As we entered the barn my gaze shifted to the other end of the aisle, looking to see if there were any people here. I knew my western riding was a bit rusty since I had been competing in huntseat and eventing for the past couple years. But after a few times in the saddle it would come back to me. I attached Shady to the cross ties and undid her girth. I lifted the saddle and the pad from her back. I cradled it over the stall door. I moved to her head and stroked her cheek before slipping her bridle off and putting her halter on.

Sam watched the two, rubbing her left wrist. She had it snapped by her first horse when they were gaining her trust and it was love at first touch. Sam smiled and slipped away, walking down the hall. As she looked in the stalls, she halted at Samurai's and slipped in, touching the mare to let her know she was in the stall. The mare was dozing and woke up when she touched her. Blinking, Samurai lipped her shoulder lovingly, the ever cruel, angry mare a sweet, gentle mother to her human twolegger child.

I groomed the mare thoroughly and returned her to her stall. I cradled the saddle over my left arm and grabbed the bridle with my left hand and the grooming kit with my right hand. I returned them to the tack room and put them where they originally were. I walked out of the tack room, mind wandering as I walked down the aisle without paying much attention. I lookeddown at my boots, not able to here their soft thudding on the cement floor. A soft sigh escaped me, people didn't realize the small noises people like me missed hearing. I wasn't able to here water running, I wasn't able to here the soft scraping of metal as you slid back the latch of a stall door. But I had learned to manage without my hearing, I could life my life as if I had no "disability" as some people put it.

Sam watched the girl, her eyes curious, Samurai also watched her and snorted softly, stomping a hoove. With a soft whack at Samurai, Sam hopped out of the stall and leaned on thedoor, studying the girl. Did she have a place to live?

I walked up to Sam, smiling as I spoke.
Is there anything you need me to do today?
I questioned, looking at Samurai. I glanced down the hall, who had that guy been? The one who had been in the arena? Did he work here? I guess I was so anxious about meeting people that I wanted to see him again. I cleared my mind, looking back up at Sam.

Sam smiled softly."No but there is a question I want to ask you. Lets go in the house and have some coffee," Sam said, rubbing the back of her neck. A young boy ran to the barn door, looked inside the barn adn spotted Sam. Quick as a flash he was in the barn and next to the two, looking at them with his head tilted to aside."Jay! I told you to stop running where ever you go, you are gonna hurt yourself," Sam scolded, seeming like a mother wiht her kid.

I nodded and walked towards the house. I stopped and smiled at Jay. Looking at Sam, I wondered who Jay was.

Jay smiled meekly and nodded before fleeing into the barn, The horses whinnied to him and dogs that were laying by the barn door, unnoticed by Sam and Rae, got upp and followed him, barking and wagging their tails. Sam smiled and headed to the house, sidestepping as Josh ran out and went after Jay, yelling something about giving him back something. Sam smiled."This place is always hectice," Sam said with a laugh.

This barn was nothing like my parents. At Summitt Acres there were plenty of stable hands but none to talk to. But here there were plenty of people and they were willing to talk to you. Weel, atleast Sam would. I could tell Josh was yelling, but it was hard to make out what he was saying. I looked to Sam just in time tobe able to read her lips. I smiled, atleast this place wouldn't be boring.

Sam shooed her into teh house the way an old lady would make a little child coem in and sit. Going into teh kitchen, she took down two mugs and poured some coffee in them, walking over to teh table as soon as they were full and set them on it.

I sat at the table, watching Sam as she fixed coffee. My gaze swept over the room, studying the layout quickly. I looked at the cup of coffee briefly, wrapping my hands around it. I looked up at Sam, wondering what it was that she wanted to talk about. I leaned on the table, my elbows supporting me.

Sam sat forward, looking at Rae."I was wondering if you had a place to stay. We have some small houses around here that no one is living in. My family calls them bunkhouses but they are nice sized," she said. A white dog walked up, yipping up at Sam. Sam merely rubbed it back with her foot and watched Rae for a reaction.

I was slightly shocked, I hadn't expected more than a job. It would be easier for me to stay here since I worked here. Well I think I did. I kept silent for a brief second, then spoke.
You would let me stay in one of them?
I questioned. I would be quite happy if she was to say yes. I took a sip of the coffee, looking into the cup as I tipped it up.

Sam smiled, taking a drink herself."But of sourse," she siad and The door banged open in the kitchen. Josh walked in, carrying Jay by the pants. Jay's face was turning red and he tried to tug on them but Josh was not to forgiving. Sam glared at him."Put him down! What kind of cousin are you hurting the little guy who looks up to you?" she demanded. Josh made a face and laid Jay on the floor. He laid there for abit, pulling his pants down and then Josh grabbed him by the ankles, shaking him alittle."He took something from my room that I need to put in my radio," Josh said and Jay began to cry, scared he was gonna be dropped.

I wanted to jump up and take Jay from Josh, but I felt as if it was out of my hands. My gaze shifted from Josh to Jay and then to Sam, finally ending up on the cup of coffee I held in my hands. I had read their lips, able to follow the conversation. Would I have to pay rent to stay in the bunkhouse? I looked back to Josh and Jay, I wish I had know a kid growing up. I was an only child, the neighbors were elderly. The only kids I knew were at school. After the 'accident' I lost nearly all my friends except for one and he was a stable hand at Summitt Acres. He was once my boyfriend too. I shook my head slightly, not wanting to remember anything right now.
