Josh whipped into the hospital parking lot, Sam hopping out still carrying Aidan. She ran into the hospital, her eyes wild."Help! Please," she cried and several nurses came over. One took Aidan and the other paged for a doctor to come to the ER, both running to it. Sam sat ona chair in the hallway, rubbin gher neck and shifting her feet, worried sick.

The doctor set to work hurriedly, not sure why a boy his age was having a heart attack. Luckily, it was able to be helped without any surgery, so he wouldn't need any of that. It took about two hours, but they got his heart steady, and beating normally again. But he looked over Aidan's body, seeing many of the bruises and scratches and scars. One was so deep, he had to clean it out and stitch it up. Not what he had been planning on, but it needed to be done. He came out of Aidan's new room, where he would spend the night and be monitored. He knew Sam, and he knew she would never hit a child, but he had to ask...it was regulation. He held his clipboard out in front of him and looked at her and Josh.
He'll be alright. It was just a mild heart attack, and your pumping earlier helped steady him a bit more. I didn't have to do surgery, but I did have to stich up one of his wounds. I know you two would never hit anyone like that, but I'm required to ask. You never hit him, did you? He already knew the answer, so he gazed back down at his clipboard and told them what they would have to do to keep him healthy. He's about fifty pounds under the weight he should be, so keep feeding him regularly, and he'll gain it back. If possible, give him four meals of day, but I don't know about that. I'm going to keep him overnight to make sure everything is alright, but he'll be able to go home in the morning. He cannot do anything when he gets home. No stressful activities, and he needs to stay in bed for at least a week and a half. It's going to be hard, but if he's going to get better...he had to. He explained to them easily, and waited for their replies.

Sam nodded, her face still pale and her ahnds at her mouth. Josh stood next to her, a hand on her shoulder and his face worried."He is a runaway. Sam found him in the hay mound one night. I guess he was beaten by his dad after he ran away from him but he found him recently and got him again," Josh said, having heard all that from Sam.

The doctor nodded solemnly, figuring that was the case. He hoped the man had been arrested and charged, for those wounds could have killed anyone. He took a deep breath and looked at Sam's worried face. He'll be alright..I promise. He can take visitors, and I can set up a cot if one of you wants to spend the night..or two if both of you want to... He offered, knowing Sam would probably stay, but he wasn't so sure about Josh. He knew they had another boy on the ranch, so he would probably need looking after, as well as the horses and cattle. He waited quietly for their responses, feeling bad for the family.

Sam nodded."I will stay," she said quietly. Josh patted her shoulder."I will pick you both up tomorrow," he said and headed out the door, his hands in his pockets. Jay would want to know what was going on and there was the matter of the horses and the people creeping around their ranch at night.

The doctor nodded and told one of the nurses to set up a bed, and then said goodbye to them. He had to go check on his other patients, but he knew Aidan would be alright. In fact, the boy was awake right now. In pain, but awake. He opened his eyes, frightened out of his mind. He didn't know where he was, but he secretly wished that Sam was here. He took a deep breath and closed his eyes once more, his breathing to quick for someone who was asleep.

Sam walked in, her hands twistingthe other. Looking at Aidan, her eyes grew apined adn she sat on a chair next to his bed, putting her face in her hands.

He heard the door open, but he was afraid it was one o fthe doctors or the nurses. And he didn't want to talk to them right now. But as he waited, he heard the person settle in the chair beside his bed, and he wondered who it was. He opened his eyes and his eyes met Sam, hunched over and hiding her face. That made him feel even more guilty about being with them.Sam.. He ventured, his voice quiet and a bit hoarse, but still alright. He waited patiently for her words.

Sam jumped slightly, lifting her head to look at AIdan."Hey Aidan.. Feelin' better" she asked hoarsly, her face pale. But she smiled slightly, glad he was awake.

Looking at her, he felt as if he wanted to cry. He had caused her all that worry..all that pain. He didn't want to do that anymore. SO he made his decision with resolve. As soon as they got home, and he was alone, he would leave. He had to...it was the only way it would make their lives normal again. Hearing her question, he nodded.Yeah...I'm sorry...

Looking at him, Sam blinked in confusion."Aidan, it wasn't your fault," she said adn hugged him softly, not wanting him to feel as if it was his fault.

Hearing her words, he looked away for a moment. No matter what she told him, he knew it was his fault. Everything was always his fault. His mother's death was his fault, his dad beating him was his fault, and now this was his fault. He had to get used to it. Feeling her hug, he returned it limply, and then laid back down. He just wanted morning to come so he could get out of here.

Sam sat quietly for abit, slowly beginning to hum."Lay down.. your sweet and weary head... night is fallling.. you have come to journey's end," she sang softly, the same lullaby she sang when Aidan ran off that one night.

He recognized the lullaby, the one that had made him fall asleep so quickly. He relaxed himself and felt himself drifting before he could even fight it off. His eyes closed and his breathing deepened, and he was asleep for the time being. He didn't know how long it would last though.

She still sang, her eyes soft and her head bowed... Lay down Your sweet and weary head Night is falling You’ve come to journey's end Sleep now And dream of the ones who came before They are calling From across the distant shore
Why do you weep? What are these tears upon your face? Soon you will see All of your fears will pass away Safe in my arms You're only sleeping
What can you see On the horizon? Why do the white gulls call? Across the sea A pale moon rises The ships have come to carry you home
And all will turn To silver glass A light on the water All souls pass
Hope fades Into the world of night Through shadows falling Out of memory and time Don't say:«We have come now to the end» White shores are calling You and I will meet again
And you'll be here in my arms Just sleeping
What can you see On the horizon? Why do the white gulls call? Across the sea A pale moon rises The ships have come to carry you home
And all will turn To silver glass A light on the water Grey ships pass Into the West Her voice grew softer a the end, her hands clasped before her and her head stayed bowed when it finsihed.
