The mare turned sharply again and spotted the finish line. With a snort, she used the rest of her stored speed and shot forward, her head bobboing slightly as she galloped.

Melanie leaned with her as the made the turn and then saw the finish line ahead. She let her open up, giving her her head to run. This mare was fast, and with more conditioning and training, could be even faster.

Shada tore through the finish line but wouldn't stop. She continued to run, her legs pumping up and down. Demo snorted and whinnied form his stall as did Dovey and Angel. They cheered for their friend and kindred on as she tore past their view.

Melanie knew this was where the problem lay. She didn't give up though, and she didn't jerk on her mouth. She eased her up gradually, standing up in the stirrups, using half halts to slow her. Melanie was strong, and she could handle this. She pulled and gave, pulled and gave, then used the right rein, and then the left, giving and pulling. The mare would slow soon enough. She would give more pressure on the bit each time, making her focus on stopping.

Shada snorted and tossed her head, trying to keep going. Fianlly, she squeled adn begna to circle, ignoring the commands she was given by the rider. Dovey snorted form teh stalls and whinnied. Shada snorted and pawwed, still going in a circle. Suddenly, her muscles bunched and she lept over the fence. It was too tall and she could have easily went over it even if she wasn't a good jumper.

Melanie didn't understand why the owner didn't tell her the mare didn't stop using normal commands. She sighed and went into a half seat over the fence. She had jumped before and knew what to do. But the mare would hurt herself if she wasn't careful. Melanie finally grew angry enough and pulled hard on the reins. It wouldn't hurt the mare, but it would get her attention. She turned her in tight circles, making it so it was hard to keep up the fast pace while circling. It made her concentrate on circling.

Shada snorted and stopped, feeling a sharp pull on the bit. Her ear wnet back adn the groom walked over, ahnds in her pockets. She looked up at her with dull eyes."I told you she listened to voice commands," she said."That was one of the ways how she was trained." Taking the mare's reins, she murmered to her softly, rubbing her nose.

As she stopped finally, Melanie's eyes darkened as the groom walked over and told her she had told her to use voice commands. She had never said that. You never told me she used voice commands. It would have helped. She said, slightly angered. She would have remembered if it had been said. She dismounted, her hand on the mare's neck in apology to her. She took her hand off and waited for the groom's response.

The young girl stared her smack in the eye."Yes, I did. When you asked about her," she said. With that, she led the mare back to the stable to untack her. The mare snorted softly and nibbled on her hair. IN her place, another groom came over to Melanie."Pleas excuse young Liz. She loves these horses and doesn't really listen or know better. You should have waited and spoken to Miss Peachtree about Shada. She knows more about them then THAT youngester," he said, his last words slightly snotty.

Melanie glared at her, now angrier beyond belief. The girl had said nothing about voice commands when she had asked, she knew. She reviewed the conversation in her mind. She turned to leave, then was stopped by another groom.Well..she didn't tell me anything about voice commands or I would have used them. I just made myself look like a fool. She said angrily, not happy at all.

The groom shrugged."Thats what you get when you talk to a kid. Even one as young as her. She thinks she knows everything but she is only a child. And a street rat one at that," he said with a sniff. She had been living on the streets when she wandered into a racetrack and saw the horses. He smiled sadly."Is there any way I can make you feel happier? Miss Peachtree is heading back to the stable because a mare is having a foal and its her best." Looking bac, you could see a truck shooting out of the selling area, headed for the highway.

She listened quietly to the groom's words, still steaming. She shook her head.I doubt Ms. Peachtree will want to sell any of her horses to me after that. If I had known... She said, still beating herself up about it. She sighed softly and then shook her head once more, frustrated.

The groom smiled sidely, his eyes twinkling. He was an older looking man, almost seeming to be old enough to be her grandfather."When she is gone, I am in charge. Would you like to look at hte stabled horses?" he asked her, moving his head to aside. As head groom, he had just as much say in these horses' futures as Miss Peachtree did."And don't take her seriously. She doesn't like anybody but her horses. THere was a rumor she had to chose between going to her nephew's graduation or go to a racetrack to help with one of her horses that fell during a race. She chose the racetrack."

Seeing the smile, she became uneasy and uncertain. She didn't really know what to think anymore. She nodded with a bit of hesitance though.Alright...She told him gently and then heard the rest of his words. She nodded at the story, feeling bad for the nephew. But she would have probably made the same decision. She sighed softly and walked after him.

The old groom nodded and walked to the stable. He seemed alright but if you watched him carefully enough, you could see him limp once in awhile. Liz saw them coming and glared. Like a mokey, she scurried up into the haybarn and ignored them. The horses looked up adn watched her, able to see here through teh gaps in the floor up there. Shada was clean and sweat free, now a easy, happy mare.
