Kai had called an out of town vet to keep an eye on the mare, Sara. Since he hadn’t been able to get hold of Sam Tupa, the local vet. The woman was resting her hand on the mares large barrel, and talking to her assistant who was jotting stuff down on a note pad. Kai stood outside the stable, arms folded and looking on in concern. The vet assured him that she would look after Sara for now, and that he should go get some rest, his sleepless nights worrying over the mare plainly visible on his furrowed brow and his hooded eyes. He looked terrible in short. So he walked back to the room in the center of the foaling area and sat at the table with a mug of coffee. On the other side of the table sat Lilith, anxiously biting her lip and looking into another stable at a thoroughbred mare, Pandy who was laying on her side with her barrel bulging. Kai looked at the mares, it wasn’t long before most of the others foaled either, but these two had been bred earlier and were around foaling time. Pandy was all healthy; the only thing was whether she would accept the foal or allow anyone near it. But Sara was in need of more attention at the moment, since twins were expected. He listened to the relative silence, the vets talking, and Lilith humming softly a tune that was stuck in her head. It was all so calming. And he fell asleep.
He awoke what seemed a few minutes later, but when he looked at the clock on the wall, saw it read 4:35, when he had last glanced at it the time had been just passed 2:00. He jumped out of his chair, Lilith was by the door of Sara’s stable, Kai looked over her head. ''Any news?'' he asked, looking at the mare now laying on her side, the vet crouched beside her.''She said both foals are alive, but she thinks one is going to be still born..'' she trailed off as she spotted Kai looked worried, and his eyes were cast at the floor. Lilith spotted the clock on the wall and gave a sigh,''I’ll see you later, I have to go shopping now'' the girl left the building and Kai went and sat at the table again. His coffee had gone cold, so her absent mindedly ran his fingertips over the rim.
Another hour later, and Sara had gone into labor, and was ready to start foaling. Kai, stood next to the vet. The vet reassured Kai that the mare would be fine, and at that moment the mares muscles contorted. Kai watched as the vet busied herself with the foaling. A few minutes later, on the fresh straw lay a slightly damp bay colt, his white star the only marking he had, but the two vets were still delivering another youngster. There were complications, the second foal was facing the wrong way as it was being born, the newer vet started panicking, but her teacher told her to stay calm and help her. Kai paced back and forth anxiously. The first foal sat there, looking as though it was none the wiser of what was going on. Kai could see the foal being eased from the mare, the hind legs of a small and delicate chestnut. Minutes passed and now the barrel and shoulders had come to view, and the rest of the foal finally collapsed onto the straw bedding. Kai at first glance thought it was dead a he shook his head in frustration, but then the vet spoke ''She’s breathing!'' He jumped and hurried into the stable and looked at the filly, she was sitting on her side, her eyes slightly glazed but still looking round with an inquisitive stare. He felt relieved, but still the youngster look worse than her brother, her ribs were easily plane to see, and she seemed very weak. Her brother was standing already. But she stayed down. Sara got up shortly after, she sniffed over her colt, and nuzzled his shoulder, then the small bay foal wobbled round and began nursing as
Sara turned her attention to the filly. She lowered her head and nosed the foal, who gave a squeak. Sara snorted loudly and then pushed the foals shoulder, encouraging it to get up. The vets had stepped back now, and were standing outside with Kai, looking at the filly.''She looks fine, she could do with a bit of meat on her, but otherwise she is perfectly healthy, but you should keep and eye on her''.
Kai thanked the vets, and they left the stables, he stood for a few moments and watched as the mare started grooming the filly, who was still down. He walked into the stable quietly, and Sara regarded him for a moment before allowing him closer. He stretched out and touched the fillies muzzle, it was warm and soft. The colt came over and nibbled at Kai’s hair, before he started poking and prodding at his sister with his nose. Kai sighed and stood, everything was fine. But the best he could do now was leave them all be, and go and check on Pandy. The mare next door was different story, during the time he had been with Sara, she had foaled. A small bay lump sat at her feet, Pandy stood proudly beside the foal. He eyed the bay mare through the door, and then he heard Charlie behind him.''Emilie said something about Pandy having her foal..'' he said and then spotted his mare. He squeezed past Kai and into the stable. Pandy stood stock still and eyed the boy, but let him closer to look at the foal. Kai watched as Charlie ran his hands over the youngster who awoke from a deep sleep and snorted softly. The colt had a large blaze running down his face, and both front legs sported flashy white socks and the hind right a stocking. Charlie came out moments later and grinned.''He’s fine, and Pandy hasn’t rejected him'' he said, and peered at the mare again, a happy smile covering his face. All in all, today had been a pleasant one, it was drizzling rain outside, but in the foaling stalls it was warm and spacious with clean fresh hay and straw. Kai put some feed in for both mares, and took a last look at the foals in each stall and then left them alone, and walked back to his office, deciding that he was only making them uneasy if he stayed, they’d be better off left to themselves to build a bond.
