Aidan was having nightmares that he couldn't seem to shake. It was late, and he was supposed to be sleeping, but it wasn't going so well. He woke from his dreams with a gasp, and his small body was trembling and sweating. He wanted it to stop...and he knew he had to talk to Sam and Josh and Jay. He took a deep breath and pushed down the covers. He was gaining some of his weight back, but now he didn't want to eat anymore. There was no point to it. He just wasn't hungry, and these late nights weren't helping his case either. The dark cricles were reappearing, and the only thing that seemed to help was Charlie. But now he was growing distant from her. He still cared for her and exercised her, but only on the lounge. He didn't have the heart to ride. Seeing the first rays of morning peeking over the sky, he rose and dressed in jeans and a tee shirt, belting the pants so they would stay on. He opened the door silently and slippped out then shut it with barely any sound. Jay was a deep sleeper anyway. He strolled out into the kitchen and thought about eating, but then sighed. He sat down in the kitchen chair and leaned his elbows on the table, looking a tthe clock. Four o'clock.

From outside, Sam walked in the kitchen, rubbing her face. One of her steers ran the fence separating them from teh horses and collided with Josh's gelding, tearing open his shoulder. And Josh had a competition next week out of state. Also a dog got hit by a car and she couldn't save it. The poor thing died on her counter from a rib poked into his lung. With a sigh, Sam looked up and blinked, seeing Aidan up.Aidan.. why are you up so early? she asked, walking over to the counter to pour herself a cup of coffee.

Aidan didn't hear Sam come in, and when her voice reached his ears, he jumped. Looking up sheepishly and getting the exhaustion off his face..he hoped...he thought about her question. What excuse could he come up with?I don't exactly know why.. He told her...which was somewhat honestly. He didn't know why he was getting nightmares..so that was easy enough. He sighed and hoped she wouldn't question him about not riding Charlie. She still got exercised everyday and taken care of, so he wasn't treating her badly. He just dind't have the heart to ride anymore. He waited for her reply.

Sam sat down next to him, taking a sip of her coffee.Sure about that? It seems to me something is bothering you, she mused to her coffee cup, looking at Aidan. Steam floated off of her coffee mug and she hoped Jake didn't notice she was gone. She had told him she had to work so he may have gone back to sleep.

Aidan looked up to her as she spoke, and he knew he couldn't lie to her. But she was newly married, and he didn't want to make things worse.It's...nothing... He was about to explain, but then Jake walked in, and he didn't trust him fully yet. He shrugged and then stood, grabbing an apple from the fridge. It wasn't for him....for he hadn't even eaten anything smaller then that in a few days.I'm going down to the barn. He explained and then hurried forward and out the door, and down to Charlie's stall. Hefed the groggy horse the apple and then stood outside the stall, leaning up agaisnt the door. Why couldn't he open up more...after all of this time? Why couldn't he learn to trust easily again?

Sam nodded and watched him go outside, her eyes worried. When he was gone, she got up and walked over to Jake, setting her head on his shoulder.I am worried about him, she said quietly. He's not eating right, not acting well, and he seems to be uninterested in.. anything. A small tear escaped her eye and she wiped it off her face, sniffing softly.

Jake sat his coffee mug on the counter, rushing forth to the barns, he stood at the door of the barn.Aidan, you can trust me He said gently. He shut the big sliding door and leaned on it, his golden band glimmering in the barn's dim light. What's going on? He asked walking up to the boy and putting a hand on his shoulder.Tell. He said softly.

Aidan was unaware of the worry he was causing Sam. If he was...he would do more to hide all of this. He didn't hear Jake come into the barn, and when he heard the deep voice, fear shot through him. He jumped back from the stall door as if it had burned him, and he scurried away from Jake, not realizing who it was. He looked up at the man, the fright still in his eyes. It's nothing...I'm fine.. He said, and then felt the hand on his shoulder. He had winced right before it had come down, thinking Jake was going to hit him or being unruly. All of the fear and the untrusting nature was coming back to him. He shrank away from Jake, not knowing what to do.

Jake's hand turned Aidan's shoulders.Aidan, I know that you're scared, I know you hurt inside, I know. Trust me Jake himself had been a runaway.I know it's hard for you to trust...anyone, but Charlie. He sighed gently. It was like that for me too. He wanted to gain the trust of this boy, it was important to him

Sam walked to teh barn quietly, greeting each horse taht cam eup to teh fence. The sidedoor was open and she leaned on it, looking in at the two, unnoticed. SHe wanted to see what was going to happen. She couldn't see Aidan and only Jake's back.

He felt the hand again, and braced himself, only feeling himself being turned around. He couldn't meet the gaze.If you understand then you know why I can't tell you. He said and backed away again. He was too afraid to do anything at the moment. Men were the most frightening for him, and if Jake knew about his past he would understand why.I can't trust you. I want to...but I can't... He said, his breathing intensified. When he looked up, all of the pain and sadness that had left him was now back.

I do know how it is for you Sam's told me all about you. And your past. You probably don't like men, or people you don't know well, it's hard for you to trust again. He said gently. He turned around.I'll leave if you want me to. He said.

Aidan was not having a good night..or morning as it were. It hadn't been going well for him for the past week...ever since the nightmares started. Something told him his father was still alive, and had in fact gotten out of jail. And that was what was keeping him on edge. He suddenly felt as if he couldn't stand anymore, and he went down to his knees, kneeling on the floor of the stables. The trembling started, but he got control of himself and made it stop.Help me...He's coming back.. He whispered softly..making no sense at all...well..to Jake anyway. He looked up at him, his blue green eyes straining and pleading.
