He nodded...he had forgotten. Taking a deep breath once more, he looked up as she rubbed his head. It was going to be hard to tell her...without her questioning. Looking away, he spoke softly.I don't want to ride anymore... He declared suddenly. RIding was the only thing keeping him happy right now, along with Ebony...and Sam and Josh and Jay...but even the people around him weren't cheering him up. He stepped back, wondering what she would say.

Sam tilted her head to aside, frowning. Why don't you want to ride anymore? she asked quietly. The two-year old looked around adn spotted Sam. WIth a shrill cry, she galloped over, stopping behidn Aidan to study the little thing inbetween her and Sam. Samurai flattened her ears and bare dher teeth at the youngster.

Aidan hadn't seen her frown, and he answered her question with a small shrug.I don't deserve to. I don't want to go back to school... He said, looking down gently. He couldn't go back...he just couldn't. Hearing hooves, he froze where he stood and felt dirt the back of his legs that were clothed in jeans. He looked behind him and turned to face the filly, backing up almost into Sam.

Sam laughed, putting a hand on Aidan's shoulder.Aidan, no body likes school, just like Satan doesn't like most people, she siad with a smile. Satan, teh youngester, snorted softly, lipping at his hair.

She wasn't getting it..and that frustrated him. THe depression had set in, and he was at an all time low. Nodding his head, he didn't even feel like trying to explain. He stood there quietly, feeling the horse lip at his hair. He didn't even respond to that. He looked down at the ground, waiting for her to speak again.

Sam stared at him for awhile, her eyes saying, Tell mewhats going on, and I will fix it. She was sick of his depression. All teenagers becam,e depressed, what was new? If he couldn't handle it, she would find him a pshyc doc that would talk to him, getinto his head. It seemed mean, but Sam had changed since she hadn't been able to have a child yet, her womb still empty and hollow feeling. Unconciously, she settled her hand on her lower belly, holding it there for awhile.

Before he knew what he was doing, he had gone forward and thrown his arms around Sam. His head came up to about her shoulder, since he wasn't very tall yet. He had yet to go through his growth spurt. He didn't cry..he was done with that. But he did close his eyes in pain, and he knew that she was getting annoyed with him. But he couldn't help it. Not all teenagers became depressed, so he didn't really know it. He dind't know that he was depressed, he just thought things had been affecting him negatively lately. He knew she wanted to know what was wrong, but he needed the silence to figure out how he was going to tell her.

Sam's eyes softened and she put her own arms around him, hugging him close. Her chin rested on teh top of his head and she rocked him alittle bit, looking at the filly. Why wouldn't he talk to her? She wanted to help, but didn't know how. But for now, she kept quiet, letting him think things over inhis head.

As soon as she put her arms around him and her chin on his head, and let him feel that familiar soothing rocking motion, he knew that he could talk to her. She cared about him, whether he chose to believe it or not. After a moment, he pulled away and looked up at her. Would she understand...or would she just get mad? Taking a deep breath, he exhaled and then spoke softly.I don't know why...But...I keep wishing..that I had parents. Parents that cared. Maybe I'd be different...and not so afraid of everything. Maybe I'd be a better person. He said, looking down and away, not knowing how to really explain so she'd understand.

Sam listened to him and cupped his cheek with ehr hand, lifting his face so he was looking at her.Aidan, is that all? You are part of this family, she said quietly, her eyes kind and soft. You may not be blood related, but you are family. Josh and Jay are your brothers just as I feel liek your part time mom, that she smiled to, her own littlejoke.Nobody is left out here, everyone is loved. If someone were to makeyou upset or beat you up, I think Josh and I would be stuck in jail for a day or so from..'talking' with 'em. Her face was kind, filledwith a caring light. As long as Aidan lived here, he was under her protection.

Feeling her hand cup his chin, he brought his eyes to meet hers, feeling embarrassed as she asked him if that was all. But he nodded in reply, not knowing what else to say. He listened in silence, letting her words sink in. He smiled at her comment about jail, but his heart swelled when she said she felt like his part time mom. He knew she wanted kids of her own, and maybe she was trying to make him feel better, but it worked. He nodded softly, letting the smile linger for a moment before speaking once more.I just dind't...I guess I didn't know what to do. I felt overwhelmed with everything..and I didn't want to bother you. He offered as an explanation and waited for her words, wondering what she would say.

Sam leaned down and kissed his forehead softly, smiling at him. You're ok. If you even need to talk, just come to me. Maybe even Josh will listen to you, she said with a small grin. She loved Aidan as her own flesh and blood and didn't want him to feel left out or sad.

When she kissed his forehead, a whole new feeling ran through him. He had never been given the affection that a child growing up needed. So that was his first kiss from a guardian or someone that cared about him gave him. And he was so greatful just for that. Hearing her words, he nodded softly and then threw his arms around her once more. He didn't care if anyone saw.Thank you... He couldn't yet bring himself to say I love you too. It felt different..almost weird. He didn't know when he would be able to do it, but those were three words that had never been uttered from his mouth. And that overwhelming thought just hit him now. Was that too different? Sighing softly, he backed away from her embrace, and looked up at her sheepishly.

Sam smiled lovingly at him and ruffled his hair alittle.Come on, go get Charlie. She has been depressed lately. And I have to take this devil into the round pen so she can waituntil Josh limps back to get her, she said, tickling the yearling's nose softly. The yearling squeled and tossed her head, returningthe affections.

He smiled for once in a long while, and then nodded, letting his hair remain messy. It looked better that way anyway. Taking a deep breath, he exhaled and felt as if he was being renewed somehow. Although it didn't make any sense to him at all. He went into the barn and let out a low whislte. A painted head popped over its door, and a low nicker was heard. He smiled and jogged towards her, hearing her louder whinny. As he arrived at the stall, she threw her ehad agaisnt his chest and let it remain there, happy now that he was back. He grinned and stroked her cheek.I'm sorry I've been ignoring you Charlie...I missed you though. He offered her as an explanation at his absense. And she accepted it. He smiled once more and put her halter on, leading her out and hooking her into the crossties. He brusehd her coat thoroughly, bonding with her once more. After he was done, he grabbed the western saddle pad and the barrel racing saddle Sam had showed him to use. He did it up, tightening the cinch and then putting on her protective boots. He bridled her and then had her stand while he slipped on his boots, putitng his sneakers off to the side.
Patting her neck, he led her forehead, glad she wasn't angry with him. They reached the arena and he led her into the middle. He made sure that the cinch was still tight, and then mounted, settling back into the western saddle happily once more. He urged her forward and she struck out in a springy gait, having pent up energy to spare.
