At this point Kirsten started sobbing. In between sobs she said My...dad...has...cancer...and...is ...gonna...die...and...I'm...not...there! Now she began bawling ever harder.

Darren felt a lump form in his throat and he stopped Colby, hoping that the Princess Guy would also halt. He took one of his hands off the stallions reins and rested it on her shoulder.''Hey, c'mon... its ...okay'' he was stuck for words. It wasn’t okay, but there was only so much he, Darren, could do. When he saw she had completely broken down into tears he tentatively put an arm round her shoulder comfortingly.

Princess Guy halted when Colby did. I...wish...I...was...there...but...I...can't! She said still sobbing.

His eyes softened at her obvious distress with the matter, and he kept his arm round her as he spoke.''Shhh, its okay. Where is he now?'' he pressed on speaking gently, it would be possible that if her father was some place near the town, then they could put the horses back at the stable and Darren would happily give her a lift over.

Far...away...from...here! Kirsten bawled. I...can't...believe...I...left...him...and...mom! She said to herself.

He gave a sigh, so he couldn’t help. He closed his eyes and spoke when he opened the again.''I never really knew my parents, I was looked after by my cousins instead--'' he shrugged inwardly, they could both be dead now for all he knew. Turning his head back to Kirsten he continued.''-- But either way, I probably don’t know what your going through now''.

Oh. I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to put this on you! Kirsten said as she looked at him.

He shook his head and removed his arm from around her, since she didn’t appear to be crying any more and fastened his hand back on the reins of Colby.''No, its okay'' he said, smiling again, casting his eyes back to Kirsten.''Are you going to be okay though?'' he asked, concerned.

That was so stupid of me. I shouldn't have done that. Kirsten was mad at herself, she made him remember bad things.

''No, its fine'' he repeated, a little more firmly. He didn’t need any more of his child hood memories coming back now. He shook his head and looked over the crop field, and gave sigh.''You want to keep going, or turn back?'' he asked, in an attempt to draw her off the subject and he kept a weak smile on his face, not sure he wanted to talk about his parents.

Glad that the subject had changed he barely had time to collect the stallions reins before he asked him to start cantering and he chased after Kirsten. The arabian, gave a buck of delight as Darren nudged him a little more, to ask him to go faster. The stallions gate changed to a collected gallop as he sped forward over the flat ground, catching up with Princess Guy.

Kirsten looked back and saw Darren right behind her. She asked her mare to go a little fasted and she sped away. She laughed at Darren's look of surprise.

'Ladies first..' Darren thought with a shrug and allowed her to stay ahead. He wasn’t sure how much flat out energy the stallion was willing to give him, since he was a jumping horse. But Darren let the reins go loose and the stallion jumped at the chance and went flat out, nostrils flaring with excitement as he was allowed to gallop towards the mare, the to Darren’s surprise, five lengths in front of her. Despite the fact that Darren was pretty tall, and this stallion was a light weight horse he was doing surprisingly well.

Kirsten slowed her horse as she reached the tree with Darren in front of her. She was proud of her horse for doing so well and praised her. She dismounted and gave her a treat.
