The mare recently lost her foal and snorted, trying to get up. Something inside her screamed to move and she forced herself up, teeth bared. Her ears were flat against her skull as she forced her leg to bear cantering, her long, thin legs carrying her over the sort distance with ease. Her tail was arched in a perfect rainbow of black, her neck arched. The Arab blood in her was pure, untainted like some. When she reached Aidan, she bared her teeth and nipped at his rump, stomping a back hoove. Jay backed away quickly by reaction but moved back quickly, growling like a dog and hovering over Aidan. She merely blew her boogers at him and went back to getting the foal up, nipping gently at his shoulder and his side, careful to get only shirt.

Aidan watched carefully, his eyes filling wtih fear as she cantered in his direction. Not him..anyone but him. Take Jay instead. He groaned softly as she slid to a stop in front of him and then nudged him to get up. He couldn't...not with his leg. He shook his head at her, keeping his eyes closed so he wouldn't have to see her injuries. But she was persisitent, and he grimaced when he felt her boogers on her.Gross...thanks a lot... He forced out and then felt her nipping at his shirt, still trying to get him up. Sighing softly, he felt for his crutches and used them, hoping she wouldn't spook. He was dirty now, from sitting on the ground. Looking away from her, he waited for what was to happen next.

The mare bared ehr teeth at Jay, stalking forward. It was a funny picture. She looked like a mare with a new foal, chasing the ranch or stable dogs away. Jay yelped and took off, the mare hot on his heels. Luckily, Jay got to the hayloft stairs and scurried up them. With a snort and a bare of her teeth, she trotted back to Aidan and stared at him with unblinking brown green tinted eyes. A snort came from her and she nuzzled im, licking his cheek up to his hair like a mother. With quiet feet, Sam came over and looked at him.Looks like you have a mom now Aidan, she said quietly and stood back when the mare glared at her.

Aidan stood unevenly now, trying to bear some weight upon his fake leg. But it hurt too much right now, and the obvious pain showed on his features. Sighing, he let off of it, and then watched as she charged towards Jay. He couldn't help but smile at the sight, but as soon as she turned in his direction, he swallowed nervously, ready to back off..just in case she changed her mind about liking him. Breathing calmly, he grimaced a little bit and then felt her tongue run up the side of his face. He made a disgusted face and slowly reached a hand up to wipe her slime from him. That's gross... He argued, and then looked up as Sam came over. He reddened as she spoke, and he shook his head.I don't know what's going on...but she doesn't think that I'm her foal. There's no way. Not even a mare would want a crippled foal. He said with a shrug and looked away. He wanted Sam to forgive herself, even though it wasn't her fault. He looked over at Jay and then back to the mare.

Sam chcukled softly and walked up to Aidan, rubbing his hair to mess it up. The mare bared her teeth at Sam and bit at her arm. Luckily, Sam anticipated that and was able to yank it out of the way so the mare's teeth clicked on air.Doesn't want ya huh? I think she will kill Ebony if she ever saw her near you. Hmmm.. This could be a problem, Sam said slowly, watching the mare. She snorted softly, shifting her hooves as she bobbed her head gently in a beat. Two leggers... they were all odd.. But this two legged foal was her's now and no one would take him away, not ever.

He smiled slightly when she ruffled his hair, but then turned his attention back to the mare. Furrowing his brow, he jumped slihgtly when she nipped at Sam unexpectedly.Hey girl..she's a friend. He offered softly and then looked over as Sam spoke. It could be a big problem if the mare wouldn't let him go.Sam..what if she doesn't let me out? He questioned suddenly. He sort of liked the fact that she had excepted him, but he didn't want to be trapped out here forever with her. He waited patiently, his arms aching slihgtly from standing so long upon the crutches.

The moon was casting down, creating shadows in Sam's face. Far in the woods, coyotes began their mournful song of life.I will put her in a corral for awhile.. She needs to heal... anyways, Sam said, walking up and slipping her arm around the base of her head. The mare snorted in surprise, tossing her head. Sam lead her around and began to head for the coraal when she looked back at Aidan. Her name is Celeste, Iris for heavenly. Celeste snorted and thought about tossing her head again but decided to let the human girl lead her away into the hig walled corral.

Aidan nodded softly at Sam's words, feeling better. As he watched the mare being led away, he felt his heart break into two. Why was all of this happening to him and the ones around him? He seemed to be at the base of every problem. Maybe he should run away again. But how far would he get with crutches and a fake leg? It seemed he would have to stay until he could gain the full use of his leg again. Sighing, he shook his head and then looked up as she spoke once more. He reapted the name quietly in his head, and the meaning as well. Heavenly. A perfect name for her, because she seemed to be like his guardian angel so far. Looking down, he took a better hold upon his crutches and went back in the direction he and Jay had come from. He just wanted to go to bed. But he wasn't looking forward to tomorrow morning with Nate. Sighing, he looked over his shoulder.Night Sam.. He offered quietly, and repeated the same words to Celeste. Looking down at the ground again, he crtuched up the steps and into the house, then went down to the hall to their bedroom. He changed his pajamas since they were dirty from being on the ground and eased himself into bed once more, laying the crutches underneath it. He pulled the blankets up over his shoulder and turned on his side, wondering what tomorrow would bring. He fell asleep that way, but it took a while.

Sam stayed with the mare all night, dozing in the cool air. Her chest rose up and down softly as teh mare grazed, nipping at grass. THe moon rose even higher, then fell. Stars winked out slowly as the sun began to rise.
Morning came soon. Nate crawle dout of hsi truck, stretching, and headed to teh field carrying two gun cases. One was way smaller than the other. The larger case held a shotgun, 10 gage. For awhile Nate had been planning this so he brought along his hand pistol, a small gun that mostly the ladies at the ranch carried, and a gun permit made to a Aidan Pierce for defense agaisnt a stalker and a abusove man. Of course, April signed it once she saw it so Nate was in the clear to teach the boy. In the hayfield, targets were set up everywhere. Most were farther out there but a good bunch were up close. Shotgun loaded, swung up and snuggedinto Nate's shoulder, he shot at the back targets, Aidan's wakeup call if he decided to flake off.

Aidan slept with nightmares beside him all night long, so he didn't really sleep. Sighing softly, he woke up slowly, letting himself adjust to the lgiht that was pouring in. Did yesterday really happen? Looking down underneath the covers, his hand went to his shin area, and he groaned out in anger. It did happen. SHaking his head he hid his head under the pillow for a moment and just yelled in frustration. Suddenly, a gun shot was heard, and he jumped upright, the fear flooding back to him and making his heart race almost too fast. He relaxed though, hearing it was way outside, most likely farther from the house. Fine with him, although he was still antsy as he got up and got dressed in a simple pair of bootlegged jeans and a teeshirt with a sweatshirt over it. He just ran a hand through his hair and went into the kitchen, not feeling hungry. He took the right pills that the doctor had prescribed and then crutched outside and down the steps. It took a while, but he finally reached the hay field, and the sleep was out of his eyes, except he had dark circles underneath them, even with the bruises that disguised his face. He sighed and then suddenly noticed the gun. He stared at it, his eyes wide. He couldn't get that sight of his mind. His father slowly pulling the trigger and the pain that followed..the heart break. He backed up a step, bringing the crutches with him, shaking his head.

Nate didn't notice Aidan, for hsi hearing was bad and the shots were loud. His eyes were on the targets and he swung to the left, shooting at one target. He had a rythm. Shot, swing, pump, second to aim, shoot, swing, pump, aim, a perfect rythm. Finally, he finished off the targets in the far and back, taking the shotgun from his arm and setting it down. He looked over at Aidan, eyebrow raised.YOu late, he said shortly and tapped his watch. It was 8:10.Come over here, boy, and sit on this bale. You have somethings to learn so you aren't some city wuss tahts scared of soem powder or someone with a gun.

Aidan flinched every single time the shots were reverberated everytime they fired. His eyes were closed tightly, and he was visibly afraid, his body trembling slightly. THe man didn't understand what kind of abuse he had suffered in his life...no one did really. THey had heard about it, but they weren't there to witness it. Some things, when his dad was here and actually hurt him...that's when they saw it...but only the after affects. They were never there when it happened. He sighed and reopened his eyes when he heard the shots stop. He made himself relax, but he eyed the shotgun warily in Nate's hand, not trusting it for a minute. Why should he? As Nate instructed him to go closer and sit on the bale next to him, he shook his head. He couldn't do it. He just couldn't bring himself over there. So he sat where he was, about ten feet away from him, or more, not daring to go any closer.

Nate growled softly like Lady when she was staring down an opposing dog, and crossed his arms, dark eyes sparking. One booted foot tapped, a irritating rythm that drove the one being stared down insane. Nate didn't move. Just stood there, his arms crossed, and his foot tapping on the ground, bits of dirt puffing up. The shotgun rested on Nate's sitting haybale, pointed away from them. On the butt of the gun, t said,To our loving mother, Leona Tupa. May your legacy reign on unapposed. Who was Leona Tupa?

Aidan caught the man's look, and he instantly shrunk back, not wanting to be here any longer. He didn't know Nate....not like he knew Josh, Jay and Sam. He would've been a little bit better if it was someone he knew, but he had just met this man last night. He swallowed deeply as he heard the growl, and he couldn't help but to be reminded of one of the dogs. He didn't like this...not at all. He looked away from the man, knowing what he wanted, but not being able to carry out the task. He was afraid, but he was even more afraid of being hurt again...physically and emotionally. So when the foot tapping wouldn't stop, he shook his head.I...I can't. I d-don't want to shoot it... He said softly. Why would he want to? Guns had only brought him pain and despair..as well as his father. Why would another man be any different? He needed someone here that he knew...someone that would reassure him that everything would be okay. Someone like Josh. But he hadn't seen the man since he had gotten back from the hospital. And his heart ached. Josh was like a father that he never had..as well as Sam was a mother to him. Sighing, he shook his head once more.

Nate raised an eyebrow, his mustahe stwitching irritabely.Listen here boy. Guns may have brought pain and dispair, but they can bring protection and happiness. How would our forefathers have fought for this land if there were no guns? How would we have won the World Wars without guns? Sure, they may have caused that, but they solved the problem. Guns can be deadly if someone uses them for bad or to hurt someone, but they can also be wonderful if you use them for good or to save somebody like hunting a deer for food, keeping a robber at bay, or to put a poor animal out of its misery. Now boy, come over here before I make you shoot this shotgun instead of the pitiful hand pistol I brought for ya, he rumbled. If you watched him, you could see where Sam got her stubornness, her care, and also her thick dark hair and dark eyes.
